Challenges

Reflective glazing for privacy in the internal courtyard

To integrate a modern glazed facade with the historic sandstone building, the design incorporated a combination of soft glass curves, scalloped metal cladding, and fluted fin features in coloured, anodised finishes.

  • Recovering the project from another facade contractor before construction
  • Complex buildability challenges to address installation sequencing
  • Replacing the rooftop with a four-storey extension

Part of the building’s restoration was reinstating the original garden courtyard. To provide privacy for hotel occupants, a Mirror Glass Box inspired the new courtyard, with reflective glass and perforated polished stainless steel cladding that reflects the open sky above.

Full redesign before construction

Adding four storeys on top of the existing seven

We recovered the project from another facade contractor, which meant we needed to partner with a local facade contractor to establish a new supply chain. We also had to redesign the facade before construction could begin, which included design documentation, planning and material sampling.

The original rooftop was replaced with an extension that celebrated the existing sandstone facade. The extension was set back from the existing heritage, and incorporated glazing and aluminium with externally expressed fluted fins and curved glass corners.
